Hopewell Middle School Band

Promoting Excellence Through Music

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is the premiere performing ensemble of the HMS band program.  The group consists of advanced 7th and 8th grade students who are admitted by audition.  Band classes meet daily during 3rd (9:35-10:27am) and 5th (11:25am-12:17pm) periods.  Regular after-school rehearsals are held on Thursdays (3:40-5:00pm).  Auditions will take place in August, during the second week of school.  In addition to the winter and spring concerts, the Symphonic Band will participate in various other performances which include Large Group Performance Evaluation and the Milton cluster concert.  This ensemble will also perform for the 2010 Georgia Music Educators Association's annual In-Service Conference in Savannah, GA.

Concert Band

The HMS Concert Band is comprised of 7th and 8th grade band students.  Classes meet daily during 2nd (8:40-9:32am) and 4th (10:30-11:22am) periods.    After-school rehearsals are held mostly on Tuesdays (3:40-5:00pm), and are only scheduled prior to an upcoming performance.  Students in the Concert Band will be auditioned for chair placement (a ranking according to the performance abilities of students within each instrument section).  Auditions will take place in August and December. In addition to the winter and spring concerts, the Concert Band will participate in the Large Group Performance Evaluation, and a theme park music festival.

Sixth Grade Band

Sixth Grade Band classes meet daily during 7th (1:48-2:40pm) and 8th (2:43-3:35pm) periods.  The students are scheduled for classes according to their instruments.  The Sixth Grade Band will perform for our annual winter and spring concerts, and will also compete in the Music in the Parks Festival, hosted by Six Flags Over Georgia, in the spring.  After-school rehearsals, though rare, are necessary due to the fact that the band is split into two classes during school hours.  These rehearsals will be held mostly on Wednesdays (3:40-5:00pm), and are only scheduled prior to an upcoming performance.

After-School Beginning Band Program

The HMS Beginning Band Program is open to sixth grade students who:

1.      Have no prior band experience

2.      Have only fourth grade band experience

3.      Desire a refresher course before enrolling in the band class

The weekly program will take place throughout the first semester of the school year, and will be held Monday afternoons from 3:40-5:00pm in the HMS band room.  Students who successfully complete the program will be enrolled in a regular band class beginning in January.  Interested students must submit an application either to the front office or to Ms. Murphy (room C110) by the end of the first week of school.  Click on "Forms" to download and print an application.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band is an extracurricular ensemble which meets Thursday mornings from 7:45-8:25am in the band room.  The Jazz Band will perform for Milton High School's annual Jazz a la Mode event, in addition to various school activities throughout the year.  Membership is based on the student’s ability to play a musical instrument suitable for a standard jazz ensemble.  These instruments include:

Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, Bari)

Trumpet

Trombone

Drum Set

Auxiliary Percussion

Guitar

Bass Guitar

Piano

Students playing wind instruments must be in seventh or eighth grade, and currently enrolled in the HMS band program (These students are not required to audition).  The rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass guitar, drums) is open to the entire HMS student body.  However, students who wish to play these instruments must see Ms. Murphy to schedule an audition.  Applications for membership in the HMS Jazz Band are available in the band room and the front office.  You can also download and print an application by clicking on "Forms."  Rehearsals begin in September.
